Zaltek Digital provided a unique and personalised frontend theme to Luton for their new Localgov Drupal website, along with expert advice and support on how to effectively use Drupal content types and page components.

The Challenge
Luton Borough Council needed help getting started with the platform. With our collective expertise in Drupal and frontend development, we were more than prepared to provide them as requested:
- Expertise to their IT team in Drupal, open-source and cloud sharing technologies.
- Drupal technical development skills to install the Localgov Drupal code, as well as make some feature changes.
- A Luton specific theme and homepage.
- Custom content types, views, blocks and pages.
- Localgov Drupal coordination to contribute to their standards development and relay feedback.
The new intranet would have appropriate security, authorisation and management information capabilities. It would need to adhere to GDS standards, and be WCAG2.1 compliant.
Our Approach
For this project, we followed our five step process. Which involves:
Workshops > Wireframe > Hi-definition Figma Design > Static HTML/CSS/Javascript prototype > Convert static HTML site into Content Management System
Specifically addressing WCAG2.1AA compliance in the Static HTML phase. We test the static prototype on mobile devices to ensure a good user experience.
We worked in close communication with Luton Borough Council, collaborating on Miro to pinpoint key thematic elements and page components. We also posted bug reports and sought advice on the Localgov Drupal slack channel, contributing to their open-source community.
We conducted our own user research and took inspiration from some of Luton’s core design concepts from their original website to ensure their users would still feel at home on their new home page.
The Result
We used our strong background in Drupal to understand the design goals of the localgov distribution, so we could seamlessly integrate our tailor-made custom blocks, views and pages. Additionally we isolated elements of the existing Localgov Drupal components to add our own tweaks and styling.
